Cinco de Mayo on the Square with Cerulean SouL

05.05.2022 - How many talented young musicians does it take to have a Cerulean Soul Jazz Band?  In the case of the Harvester Performance and Event Center’s first Cinco De Mayo on the Square in downtown Smithville, TN, it takes TEN - that’s how many talented young jazz players almost filled the Harvester’s ample stage of the Flatwoods Main Hall for the final  “soft-open” event.

In honor of Cinco De Mayo, Bert Driver asked the versatile group to perform a “Latin-based” jazz setlist, and they pulled it off with what appeared (and sounded) to be “expertise beyond their years” by creating very authentic jazz grooves to support each player’s or vocalist’s fresh approach to solos on standards such as Perfidia, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Girl from Ipanema, Besame Mucho and other outstanding Latin-influenced song selections.

It was obvious to even the most casual observer that jazz fans are perfectly willing to be moved by grooves and rhythms from other musical genres when presented by talented musicians such as Cerulean Soul’s strong musician line-up which included:

  • Blaise Hearn, Trumpet

  • Zach Tyler, Saxophone

  • David Cooper, Trombone

  • Sam Glover, Guitar

  • Baily Johnstone, Bass

  • Joshua Cook, Drums

  • Bill Alexson, Piano

  • Liam Hickey, Congas

  • Euge Sosa Barboza, Bongos

  • Marguerite Beane, Vocalist

All of these talented (and very enthusiastic) players are associated with MTSU’s outstanding music department in one way or another, or connected through one of Jordan Morack’s (Ceulean Soul’s Bandleader) many musical projects while he was securing his master’s degree from MTSU’s music department. Authentic, infectious Latin jazz music in Smithville, TN on Cinco De Mayo – What, REALLY??!!... Yes, my dear skeptical friend, proof-positive that times do change for the better!

Thanks to all who made Cinco De Mayo on the Sqaure a successful “test run” (including Tio’s Taco Truck “On the Road” serving up their unmatched, authentic Mexican fare from the large catering kitchen at the Harvester).

Next up for the 2022 Concert Series is the Third Annual Center Hill Lake Fest, Saturday, 5/14/22, with returning special guests McKinley James Band as headliners, and opener (new to this area) Jimmy Wayne Garrett. Stay up-to-date with all the events in the Bert Driver Network (Nursery, Burlap Room, and the newly-opened Harvester Event Center) by signing up for our Burlapper Newsletter.
