A Tribute to the DeKalb County High School Tigers

05.02.2025 - For 14 years, I’ve had the privilege of watching my son, Milas Driver, and his teammates on the DeKalb County High School soccer team grow from young children into fine young men. I remember the early days, when he was just three years old, running around on the soccer pitch in all kinds of weather across nearly every city in the Upper Cumberland. There were late nights filled with defeats, injuries, sacrifices, and Victory!!; in fact, this particular group has been part of many successful teams over the years, and they notched the 100th victory in the history of the program just a week ago that ignited pride in our hearts.

What stands out the most to me is not just the wins or losses, but the sheer joy these boys have brought to the game. The pure love for soccer, the satisfaction of being together as a team, culminated beautifully on Thursday night in Smithville with their victory over Jackson County. They have shown intestinal fortitude through many challenges against powerful teams and no doubt the other squads remember facing the Tigers this season because the other teams were worn down and limping when they left the field...that is how this 2025 edition plays - pure grit with a formidable defensive unit.

This remarkable group of young men, who first played together in the recreational soccer leagues behind Shiroki, Airport Park, Northside, The K-Hole, and now on the beautiful, modern soccer stadium with lights here on the DeKalb Campus in Smithville. These boys are part of what built the program and they have grown alongside our community. I have watched the transformation from recreational soccer to a burgeoning middle school program, and now to a high school team that competes with excellence. The development of a stadium and soccer pitch that is unrivaled in the Upper Cumberland is a testament to our community's commitment to these young athletes.

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I feel immense pride for Milas and all his senior teammates. The dedication and camaraderie they have shown over the years are nothing short of inspiring. I am grateful for the moments we've shared, the friendships forged, and the lessons learned both on and off the field.

To the DeKalb County High School Tigers, congratulations on your achievements, and thank you for the memories that will be etched in my heart forever. I am proud to have been part of this ride, and I look forward to what the future holds for each of you.
